Ion Power was the first company to commercialize a Catalyzed Coated Membrane (CCM) made from cast film based on NAFION
® PFSA polymer. Our patented process results in a durable and very cost effective CCM for use in hydrogen or reformate fuel
cell applications.
Performance Data.
Our Catalyzed Coated Membranes offer the following advantages:
20 to 30 micron thick membrane component for high power density.
Membrane component containing the stable NAFION® ionomer resulting in long component life.
Unique fabrication method allows the perimeter area (outside of the active region) to be substituted with a strong
material for sealing integrity, durability, and reduced cost.

HYDRion™ Products are catalyzed membranes for water electrolysis applications based on NAFION®
membranes. In addition to manufacturing Catalyzed Coated Membranes for fuel cells, Ion Power is engaged in the production of catalyzed
membranes for use in the electrolysis of water. These materials are used for laboratory gas generators and hydrogen injection systems for
internal combustion engines. For a quote on a custom designed electrolyzer CCM, please go to our design menu
or go to our company for prices.
PLATion™ is designed as a diffusor for use with HYDRion™ water electrolysis membranes; however, PLATion™
can be used as a diffusor for other electrochemical applications. The Material can handle extreme conditions; it has an excellent corrosion
resistance. PLATion™ is 4 pieces of 0.254 mm Titanium Expanded Metal welded on a 0.051 mm thick Platinum-coated Titanium Expanded Metal.

LIQUION™ is a dispersion of NAFION® in a mixture of water and alcohols. This product is manufactured
by Ion Power from NAFION® polymer. LIQUION™ is available in 5% by weight solids and 15% by weight solids, low and high
equivalent weight (EW) polymer. Available LIQUION™ products are:
LQ-1105 5% by weight NAFION®, 1100 EW
LQ-1115 15% by weight NAFION®, 1100 EW

NAFION® is a registered trademark of E.I. DuPont de Nemours brand of perfluorosulfonic acid/TFE copolymer.
NAFION® polymer has excellent chemical stability (similar to TEFLON®) while at the same time allowing ion transport.
These properties have led to interest in the use of NAFION® polymer for various electrochemical applications from industrial
chloralkali cells to fuel cells. Please click on our resources page for technical information related to
NAFION® products or go to our company store for prices.
DuPont™ NAFION® products are available in various forms:
Pellets
Used for acid catalysis of many organic reactions. Product names include: NR40 (1000 EW polymer) and NR50
(1100 EW polymer). The product is also available in its precursor form as R1100 and R1000. Click
here for an MSDS. For prices, please refer to our company.
Non-Reinforced Films
These films are used as separators in electrochemical cells requiring high ionic conductivity, for example in fuel cells and water
electrolyzers. Product names include:N115, N117 and N1110. For pricing please go to our company
store. More technical details are also available on our
resources page.
XL Membrane
DuPont™ Nafion® XL membrane is an extended-lifetime reinforced membrane based on chemically stabilized perfluorosulfonic acid/PTFE
copolymer in the acid (H+) form. The reinforcement improves the membrane’s handling and physical properties.
When the reinforcement is combined with the chemically stabilized polymer, the membrane exhibits both substantially lower fluoride ion
release and longer operating durability under fuel cell conditions. Please click on our resources page for
technical information related to these products or go to our company for prices.
Cast Films
PFSA NR-211 and NR-212 membranes
are non-reinforced dispersion-cast films, based on chemically stabilized perfluorosulfonic acid/PTFE copolymer in the acid (H+
) form. The physical properties remain the same for the stabilized membranes, which exhibit substantially lower fluoride ion
release compared to the non-stabilized polymer - a sign of improved chemical durability. NAFION® PFSA membranes are widely used for Proton
Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells and water electrolyzers. The membrane performs as a separator and solid electrolyte in a variety
of electrochemical cells that require the membrane to selectively transport cations across the cell junction. The polymer is chemically
resistant and durable.
Fabric Reinforced Membranes
These reinforced films are typically used in industrial sized electrochemical applications with large areas (typically in square meters)
where membrane strength is required. Product names includeN324 and N424. Please click on our
resources page for technical information related to these products.
Polymer Dispersions
The NAFION® polymer is dissolved in a dispersion which can be used
for casting films or manufacturing other products containing NAFION® polymer. Available products
include: D520, D521, D1020, D1021, D2020, and D2021. D dispersions are manufactured by DuPont™ and
distributed by Ion Power on a global basis. For more details and pricing on these products please go to our company or resources page.
DuPont™ Teflon® PTFE TE-3859 fluoropolymer resin is a negatively charged, hydrophobic colloid, containing
approximately 60% (by totalweight) of 0.05 to 0.5 μm polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)resin particles suspended in water. Seen as a milky white
liquid, it also contains approximately 6% (by weight of PTFE) of a nonionic wetting agent and stabilizer. Teflon® PTFE TE-3859 is
especially formulated to provide void-free coatings with enhanced surface smoothness and gloss. Please click on our
resourcespage for technical information related to these products or go to our company for prices.
Ion Power distributes SGL Carbon's SIGRACET® graphite paper:
SGL Group is thus among the few companies worldwide to undertake mass production of key components for PEM fuel cells.
The quality of these graphite components is of eminent importance to the performance of the fuel cell. Ion Power has found that the SIGRACET
® grade gas diffusion media offers the best performance in all fuel cell applications and we have been providing this for years
to our customers. Typical standard grades for general applications are GDL 24/25 AA, BA, BC; GDL 10 AA, BA, BC and
GDL 34/35 AA, BA, BC. For more details and pricing on these products please go to our company or resources page.
